Windows Live Spaces ships its latest release!

After a few months of serious planning, development, and testing, we released the latest version of Spaces last night.   What a joy to write the blog entry and be able to list off more than 10 great features that our users have requested for a long time.   Two examples that you can test out immediately:  1) Leave me a Message and 2) Drop me a comment and say hello.

If only I could talk about what features the future holds….  I guess I will have to save that for another post…

Check out all of the features we released on the Spacecraft here:

In reference to the new features just out for MSN Spaces, I am very disappointed in at least one of them.  The hideous, thick white line that is now around my photos is very ugly and distracting on my page.  I have TRIED and TRIED to use the new preferences control to eliminate it from view, but the control doesn\’t work!! Also, can\’t understand how putting the photo controls for public viewing INSIDE of the photo is any inprovement at all. It blocks a portion of the photo from view…..I have alresdy sent feedback to MSN about this. My question to you and others is, what other outside photo services are availabe to use in the spaces pages? I will be changing services IMMEDIATELY, unless I can make some improvements or corrections. I am a visual artist, and refer customers to my space. The photo feature is very important to me, and I am VERY disappointed in this new feature. Thanks you.

  2. Hi Chris,

I too am bothered by the change. I left a comment about it on the Space craft. Sorry about its tone, I realize you probably have been putting a lot of hard work into this, but I\’m a bit upset about the potential loss of readers just when my dayly views were experencing an interesting increase.

My biggest concern is that my blog has lost a great amount of readability.

Oh, and I see I\’m not the only one who\’s aving issues. ITALICS also have started looking ugly around here. I\’m far from being a computer expert, but I have the feeling this has to do with that piels aren\’t smoothened anymore like they should be (I\’m probably not using the right technical term).

  3. Pixels, I meant, pixels.

I wasn\’t using the right technical term, that\’s for sure. 😉

  4. Chris, thanks to a guy who is probably one of your colleagues at Microsoft, people will be able to solve problems that they can have with the fonts with little pain, this is good news. I feel better now, though I\’ve done a mistake which will probably require some work from me to correct. Comment page on the last article of the Space craft has some useful information.

Anyway, going back to restoring my appearance now, have a nice week-end (but I believe you\’re presumably still working on your side of the Atlantic).

  5. Hello Chris, thank you very much for your advice and it\’s the greatest update ever. I still kept the snapshot of the very early version of MSN Space, so it is clear that every evolution that you\’ve made, great job, and thank you again.

  6. OK, I probably shouldn\’t have commented on english-written pages, I have received a warning from a bot in my mailbox. I strongly suspect that somebody followed the link from some US article on which I left a comment, and tought wrongly that my page contained abusive pictures. In any case I want to say that I live in France, that my page in on the french version of Live Space, and that american standards shouldn\’t be applied to it. On every american page that I commented (including this one), I\’m going to copy the message I received from the bot, as well as my answer.

I especially want people at Microsoft ot be aware of my answer, and I think nobody will read the mail I sent to the customer service bot… Anyway, before this let me first pick a sentence from the mail I read this morning.

"Nous avons trouvé des images exposant des parties génitales dans votre espace perso lancelot–du-lac (…)"

Hahaha! In french, this translates into:

"We have found pictures exposing bollocks in your personal space lancelot–du-lac (…)"

You could at least take the pain to have your messages translated by a professional translator. Now on to the complete message I received, and my answer:

THE MESSAGE FROM THE MICROSOFT BOT:

    MY ANSWER:
Hello Microsoft-customer-service,It is obvious that this message has been sent by a bot, and indeed it was very badly translated into french, however I am writing this to you in case somebody would read. You have just been writing to me that "your site contains pictures of bollocks, lancelot–du-lac."In french, "parties genitales" means "bollocks." If you wanted to translate "genitals," you  should have written "organes sexuels."There are no pictures of genitals on my blog. There are no pictures of bollocks either. Add to that, there is absolutely nothing that would qualify under pornography in my own country (France), and probably not in the US either. There are indeed some sexy picture, but since your message doesn\’t point to the pictures which are problematic, I have no way of knowing which ones you would like me to remove. Your accusations are vague and incorrect, without the slightest argumentation, which  leaves me no possibility of reacting by complying or defending myself. All in all, there is no valid reason I would have to remove any pic of my site anyway. Hence, my only option is to move away. From what I know about the US, I tend to think that you have a problem with the pictures of feminine breasts on my page… Please be aware that breasts aren\’t genitals, and that such pictures are not restricted here in France (for example, ladies are allowed to go on the beach wearing no top around here), and that I as a european blogger have no reason whatsoever to conform myself to the US laws or accepted practices, especially considering that my page is located on the french version of Live Space… However, as I wrote earlier, I have no way of knowing wether my guess is correct. Since I have now been warned, my site could disapear without further notice starting from monday, april 23rd. I just can\’t leave my blog under such a constant threat of censorship. So, what I\’m going to do is start moving to some other, more welcoming and less puritan place. Then, on monday I will remove all pictures from my blog and leave a link to redirect readers to the new blog.Best regards,Lancelot
