Saw a great Decembrists concert on Thursday night
It has been a long time since I have gone and seen a concert, so when a friend said that she had an extra ticket for the Decembrists at the Moore Theater in Seattle on Thursday night, I couldn’t pass it up.
The funny thing is that I honestly had only heard one of their songs before and it was pretty mellow so I wasn’t sure what type of show it would be. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised.
The concert was fantastic. The Decembrists have serious energy and stage presence live. A few things that I particularly thought were great:
- They played a ton of random instruments – accordion, mandolin, glockenspiel (I love Writer’s spell check), square necked dobro (anyone remember the Skynyrd song "Ballad of Curtis Lowe"), theremin, and even cooler an organ grinder (no monkey though)
- They knew how to get the crowd involved with chanting, clapping, and general mayhem tactics like moving amongst the crowd while singing
- I knew one song but I liked and found myself moving to nearly every one of their songs
- They played for two hours straight (including a two song encore) which is pretty rare in this day and age for indie bands who dont have that much material
- They played two cover songs – one by Fleetwood Mac and another song that I had never heard before but that was great (if anyone knows what song it was, please let me know!)
Anyway, a fantastic night overall. I would definitely recommend checking them out in concert if you have the opportunity. Here are some video clips of their music in case anyone is interested.

Wasn\’t it a super fabulous concert?! Which song had you heard before? I only knew their old stuff but found their newer songs entertaining.
They\’re a great band for sure! Do you remember which songs they used the theremin on?
The square necked dobro is quite an instrument. Now I know what it\’s called. I always wondered and just called it a cool lookin metal guiatar. I recently heard David Holt play the hell out of one at a Doc Watson concert.
