The digital music standards war is so bad for consumers

It took forever for music companies to realize that CDs were a dying breed and that if they didnt move their music collections to the digital world, someone would do it for them without their permission.  Finally, they are putting their collections on the web with the help of services like iTunes, MSN Music, and Yahoo Launch. 
 
However, they are still waging this war over standards which is horrible for the overall consumer experience.  Tonight I downloaded the new Ghostface Killah album off of MSN Music at the suggestion of a friend.  It was a perfect transaction and actually downloaded much faster than iTunes.  However, when i tried to play it in iTunes, iTunes wasnt able to convert it because it was "encrypted".  The same goes for the inability to play iTunes music in Windows Media Player and Yahoo’s music service. 
 
What gives?  I thought that encryption was supposed to stop the abuse by denying users from sharing music with other users, rather than limiting the number of applications that one single user can listen to THEIR music on?  Music applications and devices like the iPod,  iTunes, and MSN Music should be format agnostic and allow consumers to play whatever format of music they want on the respective device. 
 
If this standards war doesnt cease soon, consumers will rebel and find another way to circumvent the "bureaucracy" causing more lost revenue for the now-traditional internet/media stalwarts.  I feel it coming.
