Finally a traditional media company gets the idea that the Internet can be a positive and not a negative for its business. They are showing this newfound prowess by allowing users to view any of the NCAA March Madness games on its website at: http://www.ncaasports.com The great thing for CBS is that users will still see commercials and there is no tivo to all users to skip through them.
All you have to do is register and you can watch any game live and for free with the exception of the game that is being broadcast locally (determined by IP address…wow). This is phenomenal. I just hope that they know how to manage the traffic that they are going to get. It could overwhelm their site if they are successful.
A lesson should be learned by NBC who is adamant on pursuing an old media strategy as evidenced by 1) their lack of understanding of how to monetize and partner with Youtube to distribute the SNL videos like the Natalie Portman and Lazy Sunday ones and 2) their payment of $600MM for iVillage which is almost an old media company in and of itself with little growth potential.
