Is Flickr really that good a photo viewing experience? U decide!

Am I the only one that thinks that Flickr isn’t that great a place for viewing photos?  They clearly have good search, tagging, viral spreading, etc…

The reason why I question everyone drinking the Flickr Koolaid is that when you visit my Flickr site, the photo viewing experience actually is not that great.   You have to browse and move from one photo to the next in tiny thumbnail view and then actually click on each individual photo in order to see a larger version.

Plus, when you click on the photo, in order to see it, they refresh the whole page in order to generate a new PV.  And people call them Web 2.0….

I guess I shouldn’t be giving them design advice but when comparing them against Windows Live Spaces, I don’t see how people could say the viewing experience is that much better.  Check out the two below.  Thoughts?

  1. I can think of some + points
    * you can see varied sizes including the original upload size
    * Slideshow – way better that Spaces, I especially like the control to select various pictures in the slideshow
    * Tagging!

  2. Prathiraj, I get points 1 and 3 but point 2 still doesnt make sense to me.   I cant even find their slideshow view.   If you are talking about the URL that I included in the blog entry, how do you navigate between pictures and view them in the larger size rather than in thumbnail?

  3. The ability to manage photos online in Spaces just doesn\’t work. Photos should be a separate Windows Live service that Spaces can use (via content part etc). Slideshows are nice but eck, its Flash. And I don\’t use slideshows. Half the time it crashes my browser (Flash tends to do that alot). I like being able to browse galleries or albums or sets without the need to use a slideshow – like browsing photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery.

    Spaces has no tagging support which in Flickr I rely heavily on.

    I can embed photos from Spaces which rocks but it gives me no sizing options like Flickr forcing me to manually have to change the code. For a person that doesn\’t know much about code and wanting to embed something into a website – its a sucky experience.

    The overall management of photos on Spaces just sucks

    Doesn\’t even support full high-res images like Flickr does. I pay $19.99 and have unilimited space for my photos.

    I do agree with you Chris about navigating from one photo to the next is better in Spaces with the navigation timeline at the bottom of the photo versus in Flickr.. it just sucks and takes alot of clicking.

    Spaces photo features has GREAT potential and I really want to use it full time but its just not great in the way of making my experience in managing my online photos and embedding them very good.

    That being said, I think Spaces should look at what Flickr and others are doing and try to come up with something that takes care of the missing features but presents a unique experience in managing photos online.
