Bobby Knight – Good coach but bad analyst
I have a lot of respect for Bobby Knight’s coaching ability. No matter what you think about his coaching style and techniques, it is nearly impossible to deny that his style is successful for people that choose to play for him. His teams (for the most part) win.
That said, being a coaching legend doesn’t necessarily mean that you are destined for commentating/analyst success. When ESPN hired him, I think that they were hoping for the animated coach who throws chairs and draws attention with every word he says. In Bobby Knight’s case however, ESPN got a guy who slumps his shoulders, looks tired, and lacks any positive energy on the set. On top of that, half of his analysis is biased by his personal opinions (not the facts).
We will see if this gig is just a one trick pony for Coach Knight. I sure hope so! What do you all think?
Hmm, I have to disagree about his analysis. I was just thinking the other day that I love having his biased perspective around during the tourney and he looks surprisingly comfortable in front of the camera, although I do agree he slumps his shoulders and is too reserved. My feeling is that studio analysts, just like color commentators in the broadcast booth, aren\’t bound to a code of Just The Facts — IMHO that\’s the code of the studio host or play-by-play guy, respectively. That\’s also why you want former coaches or players in those roles so they can speak from experience.

Interesting. I see your point but I think that Coach Knight takes bias just a few steps to far. Especially when you compare him to his other colleagues on ESPN. I guess this isnt the first time we have disagreed about sports…the cowboys might be another! Hope all is well out East.
