Windows Live Maps is pretty damn sweet to say the least
As any of you that read this probably know, I very rarely write about anything that is created by Microsoft unless it is significantly better than anything else out there or just really cool and useful. For that reason, I wanted to write about the new version of Live Maps.
While there are many Maps products out there, the majority of them are pretty much the same these days and offer some helpful ways of finding directions, local restaurants and stores, and bird’s eye maps. Live Maps new release offers some new features that are way above the basics and really take it to a new level. What I really like is:
- The new look and feel which includes only one search box (sounds simple but it is a serious improvement)
- The send to mobile feature which has eliminated my need to print any directions – my cell phone is saved and it sends me a link via text messaging which I can click on to get the directions
- The ability to change routes based on the traffic at the time that you get the directions
- and the coolest feature of 1-click directions which allow you to get directions to a specific place from all of the major highways in that region. No need to enter in a starting location. You can check out the version for directions to Microsoft by clicking here
There are lots of other cool features but these are the ones that have made my life with maps so much easier. We will see if it all still applies once i get myself one of those Garmin Nuvi’s….
Update: you also have to check out the video search and the ability to roll over the video directly in the results and play it without clicking.
