Saw some interesting movies this weekend

It has been a while since I have gone to a movie. Not exactly sure why because normally I am a movie watching fanatic. This weekend I saw two interesting movies though: Hard as Nails and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Hard as Nails is a documentary from HBO produced about Justin Fatica. Fatica is an unordained minister who found his own God through a combination of tough love, weightlifting, hip-hop music, and passion for Jesus. He focuses the efforts of Hard as Nails, his self-started ministry, on helping troubled youth find God.

There are definitely some moving and disturbing parts of the movie, but no matter what your religious beliefs, it is an interesting documentary which touches on many controversial issues but does not try and make you feel one particular way. For that reason, I found the film to be very refreshing. Especially in comparison to other recent documentaries out there….

The other movie that I saw this weekend was The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a true-life story of Jean-Dominic Bauby – the former editor for Elle magazine. One day he is on top of the world with a great family and job. The next he has a stroke which paralyzes him from head to toe. I wont say any more but it is a very powerful (and at times depressing) look at the power of family, friends, and especially a vivid imagination.

You can see a trailer of the movie below. Note: it is a French film with English subtitles so you have to be in the mood for a foreign film but I would recommend seeing it. Especially if you live in Seattle since it is playing at the Egyptian Movie Theater.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfuly looks really good. I read a review on Salon.com and it\’s one of their faves. I\’m going to try to see to see it tomorrow. I was really suprised and excited to see it\’s playing here in Annapolis( at the mall) Thanks!
