The National in concert on Friday night – Great show

A friend of mine, Denis, had sent me a video of a band called the National about 6 months ago along with an email asking if I wanted to go see them in concert.   After listening to the video, I was sold.  

Flash forward 6 months to last night.   They were playing at the Moore Theater in Belltown.   I met up with the regular crew right before, we had some drinks before going in (you can’t drink while watching a concert in most Seattle venues which is strange to me…) and were treated to a great performance.

The lead singer’s voice is a cross between Johnny Cash and the lead singer from the Psychedelic Furs and the guy has some serious range and power despite the fact that he said that he was having problems with his throat.   They also had anywhere from 6-10 people on stage at any point including 2 lead guitarists and a rhythm guitarist.   In addition, they had a trumpeter, a trombonist, and to top it off… a woman that played the bassoon.  That is pretty cool to say the least.

They also had a very good opening band from Portland called Menomena.   Added bonus.

I would highly recommend that you check out the National if they are coming to a theater near you.

PS, I just realized that when I am looking for a band’s website, I dont even use web search anymore.   I just go straight to MySpace.   Pretty nice niche they have…
